Meningioma in Childhood

Abstract
The incidence of meningiomas in children is relatively rare Among 28 cases of parasagittal meningiomas, Hoessly and Olivecrona found only 2 cases(0.7%) of the patients less than 10 years-old.
This 8 year-old girl was admitted to this hospital with the chief complaints of intention tremor of both hands and epileptic seizures. Her parents noticed that her right hand was somewhat weak for about twenty days prior to the admission. Five days before admission, her schoolteacher found that she apt to fall down. One week prior to the admission, she began to have akinetic type of seizures occurring once or twice a day.
Examination showed slight right exophthalmos, bilateral intention tremor, which was more pronounced on the left, severe bilateral papilledema, hyperactive tendon reflexes of the left extremities, right Babinski and moderate ataxic gait. There was no motor weakness.
The skull x-ray revealed marked separation of the sutures and a remarkable shift of the anterior cerebral artery to the¢¥ left, and abnormal vascularity of the right fronto-parietal parasagittal region was noted on the right carotid arteriograms.
Craniotomy was carried out. A fist sized tumor attached to the anterior one-third of the dura was evacuated in toto, and there was another thumb tip-sized tumor connected with the main tumor. The total weight of the tumors was 48 grams. Pathological finding was endotheliomatous meningioma.
Post-op course was uneventful and she is attending school without any significant trouble four months after the surgery.
